April 29, 2004: "Tradition and the Good Life In Every Mug Of Swiss Miss"
Circa 1957. The United States was basking in wave after wave of popular cultural revolution, which for better or worse, forever changed the American lifestyle and even the world at large. Rock ‘n’ Roll and Elvis Presley changed the way music was played and sung, the iconoclastic works of artist Jackson Pollack and writer Jack Kerouac reevaluated people’s traditional concept of art, Hollywood golden boy James Dean ushered in an era of the anti-hero in films, and television took the place of theatre and movie houses as the public’s main source of entertainment.
Swiss Miss, America’s favorite breakfast drink, couldn’t have come at a much better time. Previously, for Americans to enjoy a hot chocolate drink, it meant running to the nearest supermarket to buy blocks of dark chocolate and melting it over a stove-lit fire. The process was long and tedious and took up a lot of time. That’s why when the tin canned Swiss Miss instant chocolate drink was first introduced to the American public in Menemonie, Wisconsin, chocolate lovers instantly gravitated towards it. Swiss Miss made drinking hot chocolate easy and convenient. By just adding hot water, the rich hearty goodness of frothy milk chocolate can be enjoyed in an instant.
Over the years, Swiss Miss introduced other innovations to its product line. In the early 60’s when it was made available on a national scale, it was the first instant chocolate drink to be packaged in vacuum packed aluminum packets. In the 70’s mini marshmallows were added to the popular milk chocolate mix. Swiss Miss joined the health craze of the 80’s by introducing a low calorie and sugar-free variant..
Whatever the mix, Swiss Miss retained its old fashion creamy chocolatey goodness, which has been enjoyed globally for decades.
The Swiss Miss tradition of quality and taste was brought to the Philippines several years back. Distributed and repacked locally by Hunts-Universal Robina Corporation (HUR) using the same chocolate magic that is the heart of its heritage, Swiss Miss is now affordably packaged and readily available for every Filipino to experience anytime, anywhere.
